Celebrating Leadership and Community Impact with the Theme: “The Children Thrive When the Village Cares”
Detroit, MI — The BFDI International Training Institute (BITI) is thrilled to announce its highly anticipated Signature Sankofa Awards & Fundraiser Dinner, set to take place on Friday October 11, 2024 at the Motorcity Soundboard, celebrating individuals who have made a transformative impact on youth, education, and community development. With the powerful theme, “The Children Thrive When the Village Cares,” this prestigious event will highlight the importance of collective responsibility and the strength of community in shaping the future for our children.

This year, we are proud to honor Chief James White, Chief of Police for the Detroit Police Department; Amber Arellano, CEO of EdTrust Midwest; Dr. Darienne Driver Hudson, CEO of United Way for Southeastern Michigan; Kenneth Donaldson, CEO of Black United Fund; and Bishop Edgar Vann, Pastor of Second Ebenezer Church. Each of these exceptional leaders embodies the spirit of the Sankofa Awards, dedicating their careers to building a brighter tomorrow for our children, families, and communities.

A Night of Celebration, Reflection, and Action
The Sankofa Awards & Fundraiser Dinner will bring together prominent leaders, influencers, and community advocates for an evening of recognition and celebration. Attendees will enjoy a gourmet dinner, inspiring speeches, and the chance to connect with like-minded individuals who share a commitment to uplifting our youth and strengthening the bonds of our communities.

The theme, “The Children Thrive When the Village Cares,” serves as a reminder that every individual has a role to play in ensuring the success and well-being of the next generation. As we honor these five extraordinary leaders, we also challenge our community to step forward and be part of the solution.

Honorees Making a Difference
Chief James White – Leading the Detroit Police Department with integrity and a commitment to public safety, Chief White is a visionary advocate for restorative justice and police-community partnerships that foster trust and collaboration.

Amber Arellano – As CEO of EdTrust Midwest, Amber has been a tireless champion for educational equity, working to close achievement gaps and ensuring all children, regardless of background, have access to quality education.

Dr. Darienne Driver Hudson – At the helm of United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Dr. Driver Hudson has made it her mission to empower vulnerable families and children, creating pathways to success and resilience in underserved communities.

Kenneth Donaldson – As CEO of Black United Fund, Kenneth has dedicated his life to promoting economic empowerment and social justice, leveraging resources to uplift Black communities and drive systemic change.

Bishop Edgar Vann – A spiritual leader and advocate for social justice, Bishop Vann has played an instrumental role in addressing critical issues in Detroit, from education to poverty, and continues to inspire hope and action through his ministry.

Performers Making a Difference
This night of celebration will also include performances by Shaléa, Grammy nominated artist and actress; The Zone Dance Center, and the student choir from Detroit School of Arts.

Supporting the Future
All proceeds from the event will go towards BFDI International Training Institute’s youth development programs, designed to equip young people with the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
