EdTrust-Midwest Presents on Teacher Shortages and Student Access to Quality Teachers at the Capitol
Today, EdTrust-Midwest’s Director of Government Affairs, Jeff Cobb, and Director of Policy and Research, Dr. Jen DeNeal, presented to the House Education and Workforce Committee on ETM’s new analysis Closing the Opportunity Divide: Addressing Michigan’s Teacher Shortage Problem for Students Most in Need. The team discussed EdTrust-Midwest’s new findings, showing that Michigan’s students who are the most underserved face the highest rates of inexperienced teachers, teachers who have emergency or temporary credentials, and educators who are teaching classes that are not in their field of expertise.
During the presentation, the nonpartisan organization highlighted the urgent need to prioritize students’ access to a quality teacher workforce and presented five key policy priorities to begin to address the crisis and provide a roadmap for policymakers.
“I think we’re all on the same page …that every child in Michigan deserves to learn from a highly qualified and highly effective teacher,” said Dr. DeNeal. “It is up to all of us, advocates, community leaders, parents, educators and, you all – the policy makers – to ensure that we close this divide in our classrooms so that every child has the opportunity to succeed in school and a bright future.”
The presentation took place at the Anderson House Office Building in Lansing. To view the presentation, visit the House website.
