Statement from MinnCAN executive director Daniel Sellers on Michigan's Charter Authorizer Report

Although Minnesota is considered a pioneer in the national charter movement, we have some work to do in order to ensure that our charter schools–and all schools, for that matter–are accountable to the students and families they serve. If we’re going to provide strong charter options to kids in Minnesota and elsewhere, we must start by holding charter authorizers more accountable for the performance of their schools, and ensure they are held accountable for helping struggling schools turn around, and when absolutely necessary, close schools that are failing to serve kids well.

Like Minnesota, Michigan’s charter school community must ensure that all schools are held accountable for student achievement. A lack of accountability ends up hurting the most vulnerable students. As supporters of choice and innovation, MinnCAN recognizes the importance of ensuring that all charter schools deliver on the promise of high-quality education.
