Statement from EdTrust–Midwest on Secretary McMahon’s Michigan visit
As U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visits Michigan as part of her “Returning Education to the States” 50-State Tour, EdTrust–Midwest reaffirms our commitment to protecting and advancing educational equity for all students in our state.
While we believe state and local voices are essential to shaping strong schools, this initiative raises serious concerns about the future of federal protections that have ensured fairness, accountability, and opportunity for decades. Shifting core responsibilities—such as civil rights enforcement, Title I funding, and student loan protections—entirely to the states risks widening opportunity gaps and undermining consistent standards, particularly for students from low-income backgrounds, students of color, English learners, and students with disabilities.
Federal and state governments have a shared responsibility to ensure every child receives a high-quality education. Dismantling or diminishing that federal role would remove essential safeguards that Michigan’s most underserved students rely on. Any conversation about governance must start and end with a commitment to equity, transparency, and meaningful engagement with those most affected by policy changes.
EdTrust–Midwest calls on state and federal leaders to reject efforts that weaken protections or reduce resources for students who need them most. We urge an approach that strengthens collaboration between federal, state, and local partners—ensuring that every Michigan student, regardless of zip code, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
